Wahpper, the World’s Largest Catfish

We went to Wahpeton twice in the hopes of capturing better video, better subjects, and everything that we might have missed the first time. The second time did not reveal anything newer or more exciting. The second time around, Wahpeton seemed deserted on account of the Minnesota Avenue being all dug up. We kept asking ourselves, “What the heck are we doing here?” The Chahinkapa Zoo was a breath of fresh air, figuratively speaking!

On April 24th and again on June 20th we set out for Wahpeton, North Dakota. The first trip to Wahpeton was our very first trip on our Aprilia and we were anxious to begin our travels! Our plan was to see Wahpper and visit the zoo. It was a beautiful spring day; the wind was reasonable and the sun was shining. Along the way we encountered some curiosities probable seen only in rural Midwestern communities. For instance, we passed a mother jogging while pushing a lane-wide baby stroller. We later waited patiently for an oblivious tractor operator to let us by.

We arrived in Wahpeton desperately desiring a cup of coffee. After cruising up and down Minnesota Avenue and unable to find a coffee shop, we settled for Subway. Eventually we got our fix and headed to Wahpper, the World’s Largest Catfish (see video). This time we came with a tripod, so the video isn’t as jittery as our very first one. The zoo would not be open until May 1st, so we were out of luck.

On June 20th, our return trip to Wahpeton, we again had a beautiful day ahead of us. Again we stopped at Subway for a cup of coffee. Caffeinated, we visited the zoo and were pleasantly surprised by both the variety of creatures and the grounds itself (see photos). It was actually a pretty hot day and we treated ourselves to a couple of flavored ice cones for a buck each. We stopped by to see Wahpper again.

For some reasone we only have a handful of photos of chickens, ducks, and monkeys…
